Sonia knows what it means to be alone: As a teenager and young woman she was here without the support of family or friends. Maybe this is the reason why she works with children now. Sonia fights for her city, a place which was not welcoming to her in the past. Respect for nature and asking questions are important to her. And it is definitely the reason why she works with children:  She wishes to teach these skills to the generations growing up here.

Sonia weiß, was es heisst, allein zu sein. Als Teenager ist sie ohne Familie auf den Straßen Fort McMurrays aufgewachsen. Vielleicht arbeitet sie deshalb mit Kindern zusammen? Die meisten Ölarbeiterkinder wachsen allein auf,, weil die Eltern keine Zeit haben. Sonia kämpft für ihre Stadt, die es ihr oft nicht einfach macht. Verantwortung füreinander, Respekt für die Natur und Fragen stellen: Das gibt sie jeden Tag an die Kinder weiter.

Rafiq works as a taxi driver most every night. He sends the money to his family back home in Pakistan. But today he does not work, for tonight is the end of Ramadan. Guests are a blessing in Pakistan. And in Fort Mcmurray? “For tonight you are my family.”

Nacht für Nacht fährt Rafiq Taxi. Das Geld schickt er seiner Familie in Pakistan, die er einmal im Jahr sieht. Nur heute arbeitet er nicht. Es ist ein ganz besonderer Abend: Eid ul Fitr,  das Ende des Ramadan. In Pakistan sind Gäste ein Segen. Auch in Fort McMurray?  "For tonight you are my family."

Jerry came to Fort McMurray when the streets where still dusty and everybody knew each other. But that was a long time ago... and the times have certainly changed: Why are people from nearly 200 nations in town? And how is it that the site of Jerry’s old school is now a shopping mall?

Jerry kam nach Fort McMurray als die Straßen noch staubig waren und jeder jeden kannte. Aber das ist schon lange her... Wie ist es heute? Warum sind Menschen aus fast 200 Nationen hier? Und warum ist Jerry's alte Schule heute ein Shopping-Mall?

$500,000 per year? No joke! Nowhere else can one earn so much money for the jobs that command this wage in Fort Mac. Oil is everywhere: Most days, the tarry smell of oil permeates the air and an oily dust settles everywhere, including the film crew vehicle (which consumes the stuff at 18 litres per 100 km).

500.000 Dollar im Jahr? Kein Scherz! Nirgendwo sonst kann man soviel Geld verdienen und nirgendwo ist Öl so präsent wie hier. Sogar in der Luft: An den meisten Tagen riecht es nach Teer, der sich überall festsetzt. Auch an unserem Auto, das 18 Liter pro 100 km verbraucht.

I met Olga and Markus on an internet platform for immigration. Two years ago they came to Fort McMurray from Germany. Markus works as a heavy duty mechanic on-site, and Olga is a nurse. Why did they move here? Are they homesick?

Markus und Olga habe ich über eine Auswandererplattform im Internet kennengelernt. Vor zwei Jahren sind die beiden nach Fort McMurray gekommen. Markus arbeitet als Mechaniker auf den Ölfeldern, Olga in einem Seniorenheim. Warum sind sie hierher gezogen? Haben sie Heimweh?
